trundl Walking App - FAQs

here's some of our frequently asked questions

We get it, you like the idea but you've got some questions. Let's see if we can answer them here...

Going trundling

Who is trundl for?

trundl is for anyone who likes or needs the extra incentive of raising money for charity to help get you outside in the fresh air and start trundling more regularly. The only difference is you don’t have to raise all the funds yourself.

You do yourself and a variety of charities aligned to the outdoors good simply by getting out of the door and getting going.

It could be that you’re already a trundlr – walking for exercise, you like hiking, you’re taking the dog out, doing a round of golf, maybe the school run or commuting under your own steam – and you want to put that activity to good use.

What counts as a trundl?

A trundl is essentially most forms of outdoor activity that can be measured by a form of pedometer and in kilometers. As we count even the shortest trundl towards our charity support, that can mean a trip to the shops, a lunchtime walk with a colleague or a short stroll if you’re differently abled, are recovering from injury or are in rehab. If you like to hike or run for miles and want to dedicate your efforts to some great causes, these can of course count as trundls too. Sorry, but for now, trundl can’t track swims, treadmills or bike/horse rides (but coming soon).

How do I set my personal trundl goals?

In the app you can choose to set a number of daily, weekly or monthly trundls and decide how long they will be in time and/or distance.  You can also decide that some of your trundls will be a swap from your usual car ride and stand the chance to become one of our environmental champions. Reaching your goals will ensure that trundl will donate to your selected charities and gives you the chance to earn recognition through our fun badge awards and perhaps take advantage of one of our partner offers.

How much is trundl membership?

Our launch membership price for our special Founding trundlrs is £3.99 per month. There is no minimum commitment period. You can cancel easily at any time from your app profile page. We know you’ll love the app but we have no intention of making life difficult if you want to leave. Please see “How do I cancel my membership” instructions in General FAQs.

Our standard trundling membership will be £6.99 per month.

We will keep everyone updated via the website, newsletter and social channels to changes in our membership pricing.

How are my trundls recorded?

When you download the app, you can set up what trundling looks like for you – how many times you want to get out, for how long and/or how many steps each time. You can also indicate that you plan to swap car journeys for trundls. The app will nudge you to achieve your personal goals, but if for some reason you can’t, trundl will never judge and understands life can get in the way.  However, when you trundl, we donate. So it makes sense to keeping trundling.

What if I can’t complete all my trundls?

We know that sometimes we just can’t get out as we intended, so we won’t penalise your fund-raising good intentions. We will always give 10% of your membership to the charities that you have chosen via the app or we will split that evenly if you have not chosen any personally. We will however continue to encourage you to get back to trundling when you can and reach your personal goals because you will then participating in our collective trundl BOOSTS and doing even more good for your health and wellbeing, raise funds for others and get recognised and rewarded for your efforts.

Why don’t you provide an interactive map?

Through the GPS we do record the route you’ve taken, so you will see the shape of each trundl when you finish. We haven’t included a detailed mapping service in the launch version as our research told us that most people either already have their preferred source of mapping and route planning or simply like to follow their noses.

It’s also expensive to develop the mapping aspect of any app and we are a small team building a business without huge financial backers, so please be patient and please, give us your advice and feedback, we really do welcome it. Email us at feedback@newsite-nc.co.uk

Can I link my devices to my trundl?

As we are in our first stage of development, we’re sorry that we can’t do that yet, it costs a lot of money to add this as a feature so we are working on it.  So, for now, please use the app through the phone that you’re happy to take outdoors with you.

If I forget to press “GO” when I’m trundling, can I manually update my record on the app?

We are not able to include that feature in the early releases of the trundl app but we do intend to add it as a feature as soon as we can.

What if I have an emergency when out trundling?

We recommend that you have an offline location identifier on your device or about your person to give the best location information should something happen while you’re out trundling.

Giving to charity

How were the charities selected?

As trundl is all about getting people outside and getting active to do themselves and others some good, our charities fall into two broad buckets. On the human side, with Dogs4Autism and MOVE against Cancer for example, we support those that can gain real benefit from being active outdoors without any competitive pressure.  And on the environment side, through National Parks and the Sussex Wildlife Trust,we support our national land and wildlife heritage, making sure we and future generations can continue to enjoy the UK’s beautiful natural world and open spaces.

Why can’t I trundl for my own charity?

We would love to support more charities and as we grow our membership, we will indeed be able to add more to our roster.  And across the year we do also support a number of Guest Charities for our Collective trundl BOOSTS, so one of these may be for a cause that is also close to your heart.  We’ll keep you posted on our website or social pages about any upcoming Guest Charity Collective trundls.

How do I choose which charity I will trundl for?

In the GIVE section of the app you will find a list of all our core charity partners.  You can choose one, some or all of them and a minimum of 10% of your membership and that of everyone else who votes for the same charity will be dedicated to that cause in their next Community trundl (always within 60 days).

If you want to change your selection, you can do so in the app and those dedications will be reflected in the subsequent full calendar month.

Every month you will join in our Community trundls.  This may be in support of one of our core charity partners or for a guest charity but at no extra cost to you, even if you haven’t chosen that specific charity yourself, your steps still help us to raise money through the contributions that have been voted for by other trundlrs plus trundl pledges more and our brand partners also support donations.

How much does trundl donate to the charities?

We donate in three ways:

✓ while we are small and growing we pledge every month to donate a minimum of £100 to each of our “Community trundls” in that calendar month.
✓ in addition, we commit a minimum of 10% of your subscription to the charities you vote for within the app. (That’s income, not profit).
✓ plus some of our generous brand partners pledge to donate during our Community trundls. They will be clearly shown within the app.

This is where the magic happens. All our steps add up together when we combine these donations to bigger strides than we could achieve on our own and add motivation to walk more.

How do I know that the charities will get the donations?

trundl has Commercial Partnership Agreements with each charity and is subject to open audit by them.

We follow the Fundraising Regulator code of conduct. They are the independent regulator of charitable fundraising in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

What is a Community trundl?

A Community trundl is like a collective sponsored walk. Our very own unique trundl-ometer measures all our combined distance over a period of days or weeks. The dates, distance and charity we are raising funds for are clearly shown on the GO page of the app. You participate as and when you please, on your own, in a group or with family. We are a virtual community.

Your own personal contribution is also recorded to spur you on to participate.

trundl take a percentage of its income and that of any brand partner donations and pledge to give to charity the more distance trundlrs cover.

The power of one persons steps, when added to those of many others, add up to a really powerful solution to giving back to charity and keeping ourselves more active and outside in the fresh air.

What happens if we don’t reach the Community trundl milestone?

If we don’t collectively reach the target on the trundl-ometer, no matter. We donate the percentage proportionately,  but we’re here to raise money so we don’t make the milestones that difficult they are unattainable.

Check the app for the latest upcoming Community trundl.

Do you offer Gift Aid?

As we are a business that donates to the charities from our income, we are not able to offer gift aid.

Getting rewarded

How do the badge rewards work?

Milestone badges that celebrate your achievements are redeemed automatically: How far or how many times you have trundled, how long you have been with us, and recognition for leaving the car at home are just some examples.

How do I find and redeem the offers?

Press the gift box GET icon on the bottom right of your app screen. Scroll down past your badges section and you will see the most recent brand partner offer here. Press the See all offers button to scroll through for more. To redeem your offer: copy (android only) or make a note of the offer code in the green box. Tap the green code button and you will be taken to the brand partner page. Redeem your offer code at the checkout or follow the instructions on the partner page.

What sort of offers might I hope to see?

Our offers are all related to the outdoors, nature, health and positive wellbeing and social interaction.
We aim for good quality, genuine offers that add real value for you. This way we hope you could redeem more than your monthly subscription over the course of your membership. We are always looking for something new that you may not have tried before. Maybe an eco-friendly product or service for you and your family/pets or a new place to socialise or visit.

How do you choose the trundl brand partners?

Ideally, our brands originate in the UK. They range from larger plc’s and small companies too. The main criteria are they have to have a tangible relationship and positive impact on helping people be outdoors, celebrate the environment, nature/animals. They have to share our passion for making a difference and importantly they have to see the bigger picture and the benefit they bring to our trundlrs. Not just for themselves.

I’m a potential brand partner, how do I get in touch?

Please read our FAQ How do you choose the trundl brand partners above? If you feel you are a good fit, we’d love to hear from you.
Please click here and send us an email telling us a little bit about how you came to hear of us and what products or services in your range you feel are a great fit for our trundlrs.

General FAQs

Why has trundl been founded and why is it needed?

UK charities have been under funding pressure for years and Covid-19 made that even worse.  It’s not that people in the UK aren’t a generous or decent lot, we are.  It’s more that fewer of us carry cash in our pockets and many people want to give to a wider range of causes but want to know where and how their donations have been used. At the same time, many people find it hard to motivate themselves to take regular exercise. So, on the principle that two negatives make a positive, we’ve married the two problems to create trundl. We make it good for people to get outside in the fresh air and get moving – good for trundl’s charities and good for the trundlr.

When will you launch a Family & Friends version?

Our ‘multi-player’ version is being considered, but we’re focussing our efforts on the individual trundl offering first to ensure we get that right.

Feedback is welcome on your wish to see a Family and Friends or a Couples version of the app. Send comments to feedback@newsite-nc.co.uk

How much is trundl membership?

Our launch membership price for our special Founding trundlrs is £3.99 per month. There is no minimum commitment period. You can cancel easily at any time from the app profile screen. We know you’ll love the app but we have no intention of making life difficult if you want to leave.

Our standard trundling membership will be £6.99 per month.

Why can’t the app be free?

We know there are lots of apparently ‘free’ apps around, but inevitably these will have to be funded somehow – either by advertising, selling data or ‘payment creep’ as features start to be priced in.

We will not do any of the above.  We will focus upon delivering a cheerful and rewarding trundling membership experience for you and donating as much of our revenue as we can.  At the same time, we’ll work hard to build our list of partners so that we can donate more and more to our charity partners on your behalf.

How do I cancel my membership?

We will be sorry to lose you, but you can cancel your membership at any time from the app, with billing ceasing after the end of your current monthly billing cycle. We do this to ensure that the charities still receive the benefit and commitment of that month’s trundling.

We’d love some feedback before you go in the hopes we can help understand why you don’t want to stay, however, we don’t want to make it difficult for you to leave so if we really can’t encourage you to stay and help us make trundl better please go to:

Your profile section (top right hand of screen on app)

Go into settings
There you will find the “cancel my subscription” button. This will take you to a payment cancellation page and we will also send an acknowledgement confirming when this has been done.

Or if we can help and you would like to chat please contact us here: hello@newsite-nc.co.uk and yes it will be a human, not a bot!

How do you ensure people don’t fib about their trundls and achievements?

We have an alert monitor that can record the speed of a trundl and if this is deemed to be a car ride the distance is not recorded. We reserve the right through our Terms and Conditions to delete this from a Community trundl.
